Sony has announced that its Playstation 3 (due out in March 2006) will come with parental controls, largely based on a game’s ESRB rating.
This follows similar moves by Microsoft and Nintendo, who have both announced similar functions will be built into their Xbox 360 and Revolution consoles, respectively.
Under pressure from parents and various governmental lobbyists (in the US), the gaming industry has come under fire recently ever since the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas fiasco earlier this year. More regulation and age-control mechanisms were requested in order to avoid similar episodes as GTA:SA, in which a certain "hot coffee mod" exposed game material not suitable for children.
