I must admit the specs wow’ed me when I saw them. Based on the Cell microprocessor, it will come with a Blu-ray DVD drive that can play CDs, DVDs, and of course, Blu-ray DVDs. It is capable of Dolby digital 5.1 surround sound decoding and will support HD video of up to 1080p.
Other features include:
- ability to support up to seven wireless controllers at once (no more wires in the living room!)
- Bluetooth
- Wi-Fi
- Ethernet
- USB ports
- Sony Memory Stick
- Secure Digital (SD)
- CompactFlash (CF)
The console controller also includes technology that senses the player’s movement. This translates into character movement on screen
as you move the controller, similar to Nintendo’s Wii. Ever turn your
car in Gran Tourismo around a tight corner and your hands/body would
reflexively lean to one side? Perhaps with this tech your leaning will
actually help your car, resulting in a tighter turn.

All this looks very good on paper, but we will see how it actually stacks up come release time – the Japanese launch is scheduled for November 11, 2006.
