Windows Mobile 6 was officially announced at 3GSM Congress in Barcelona. For the next generation of WM, Microsoft has chosen to simplify the naming conventions that often caused confusion between "Smartphone" and "PocketPC" in the past. The new edition names are as follows:
Pocket PC Phone Edition (PDA phones with touch screens) = Windows Mobile 6 Professional
SmartPhone Edition (for PDA phones with no touch screen) = Windows Mobile 6 Standard
A third version, for PDAs without phone capabilities, will be known as Windows Mobile Classic.
Windows Mobile 6 is the latest update to our mobile software platform. WM6 now provides updated mobile versions of Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint that bring features previously only seen on PCs. WM6 also introduces a richer email and calendar experience, including new one-click options for email and the new calendar bar for viewing appointments. The release also ships with Windows Live for Mobile, bringing Windows Live’s email, instant messaging, blogging and — best of all — web search, to your mobile device.
