I almost got myself an Asus EEEPC 10″ model tonight at just under $4k, but they are all out of stock! 😐
Sorry not to reply earlier my line was down 🙁
Compared to the Kaiser it’s noticeably more responsive and touchflo works very well indeed. I know that was a huge let down about the Diamond when it first came out and seems HTC have learned!
I don’t miss the keyboard at all, because I usually ended up just using the soft keyboard anyway. The stock HTCkeyboard on the HD is excellent and I doubt I’ll be changing it. I do wish I had the option of making the keys just a little bit bigger. I have fat thumbs 🙂 Having said that, I notice I use the stylus less than with the Kaiser, so that’s already a good sign of how friendly it is.
The biggest surprise so far is that GPS is extremely fast to get a fix and startup… much quicker than Kaiser. Usually I’d be 500m down the road before it kicked in, but now it’s a few seconds after leaving home.
The screen is the biggest plus point for the HD… it is beautiful. I went back to the Kaiser to check settings and send some docs across, and had to squint at the screen – I never did before but that’s how different the screens are!
I think an important missing item is the screen orientation program that makes use of the the G-sensor. Stock HTC settings are practially none existent. I have GSen and Gyrator installed but they don’t seem to do the trick as fully as I want… maybe need to RTFM again and tweak a bit more.
I’m sure there will be more and more software updates to make the vast selection of software HD friendly, but even those which aren’t 480×800 still look OK. E.g. Mapking is still useable… more so with a big screen. Bookworm and other old games are still square, so there’s just more expanse of black screen.
Last thing to note right now is that I found battery life surprisingly long. I’ve read many people having drain problems and struggling to get more than a day, but I managed 3 days with plenty of playing before a full recharge from 3%. Vista Home, Ultimate and XP Pro all picked the HD up and synched flawlessly, via wire or bluetooth. One issue I have that is probably my PC and not the HD is that after the AS connection and synch the HD shows up but I can’t browse it. I could before, but not now. Minor issue, but the Resco Explorer sendto extension still works.
That’s all for now!
Kai – Have you considered the Samsung NC10? I was leaning towards the EEEPC but then this came along and a friend has one with outstanding performance from the battery. Since this will be for my daughter, I reckon it could be a winner.
jawis – Thanks for the Xmas easter egg.. the animations are good to see esp the snowing one which we’ll not need here!
