does this only apply for laptops? what about phones/ pda phones with 3.5G?August 22, 2008 at 6:02 am #2440
I went to Smartone a few moments ago. The assistant there says that the sim is a data sim and may not work on phones or pda phones. He put a data sim into a Sharp HSDPA phone and the phone was unable to accept the sim card. If you are thinking about putting one of these sims into your phone I suggest you try it first before signing up for the plan. I also thought that maybe the DX900 may be a useful unit to have when it is finally released as it is a dual sim phone. This may not be the case now if the idea is to put a data sim into one of these slots. If anyone gets to try it out let me know if it is possible.
Incidently my laptop has a sim slot to put in one of these data sim cards. So I asked the assistant if I could just have the sim and not have the USB stick. He said that that was fine. It also drops your commitment from 24 to 18 months. You also don’t need to prepay $1,128 for the starter kit. So if you can just take the data sim you start the plan by just paying for the first month 🙂
I was hoping to integrate the Mobile Broadband plan into my existing phone sim card on my Kaiser, but this is not possible. I have a current data plan with my phone sim of $188 for 100mb. So obviously I would prefer the $188 unlimited mobile broadband plan. I’m not too keen to carry both data plans, but if I take the mobile broadband plan and cancel my phone sim data plan then my Kaiser is without hsdpa 🙁 If I keep my current plan and use the 100mb on my laptop it would chew up 100mb like a starving hyena.
So now am deciding whether both data plans are justified.
One good thing to come out of it was the Smartone assistant was able to get me a cheaper phone plan. I was paying $328/mnth, but I have now changed to a $268/mnth plan. I still get 100mb, but I also get unlimited internet browsing as long I am using the default browser of the phone. So it means PIE! Probably my least liked browser, but maybe I can devote PIE to mobile friendly pages so it doesn’t run at snail pace. I found that Opera is much faster so HTC Diamond uses may have a better experience. My beloved Operamini is not covered by the unlimited internet browsing, but to be very honest it is quite data friendly so never chews into my 100mb limit.
So a cheaper mobile phone plan is always great. The mobile broadband plan for the laptop is becoming very tempting….September 4, 2008 at 12:26 am #2441
I finally signed up to mobile broadband 🙂 Oh and I managed to get it working on the phone as well. You may need to change the APN and it will work fine 🙂September 7, 2008 at 5:58 am #2442
Wow. I am interested to get this plan for my G900 that is otherwise not functional.
What is the APN to use?
What are the settings?
Could you do a screen capture for windows mobile 6?
Thanks.September 7, 2008 at 4:33 pm #2443
A non-functional G900? You mean as in neglected?
With a 800×480 screen, I think it would be a great resolution for landscape browsing.
What is the default browser on the G900?
If SE can get the Xperia out as fast as the Touch Pro here in HK I would be very tempted with the Xperia because of that screen resolution.
I’ll have those screen shots up later in the evening.September 7, 2008 at 8:32 pm #2444
Changing the APN is quite an easy task:
Head to Settings -> Connections
From there you should find the Smartone-Voda internet settings. If you aren’t already a Smartone user than you should be able to install the setting from the Network Wizard, which should also be located in the Connections folder.
Click on “Manage existing connections”
From the SMC-Voda Internet Settings you need to choose “SMC-Voda Internet” and then “Edit”.
Then you just need to click through with “Next” until you reach the “Access point name” screen.
You should see “SmarTone-Vodafone” as the APN.
Simply replace that with “Internet”
Once you have changed the APN the data sim should start working on the phone!

Thanks very much for the information.
I have just got back to HK and will go to Smartone to try out the data sim.
$188 for unlimited is great!!!
Thanks for all the screen shots.
You are right about neglected.
Hopefully, this will bring back the intended use to the G900.
