I planned a trip to HK this Jan 22-25 but I just realized that Jan.26 is Chinese New Year.
I’m curious, since we don’t celebrate this holiday here, how will it be like in HK during days before the new year?
Will retail shops be open up until the 25th? Can I expect big promos or discounts?
Thanks!!!January 11, 2009 at 9:59 pm #7602
Don’t fear Ryan, shops will definately be open before and up to CNY. In fact quite a few places will be open way after midnight on New Years Eve. I also am finding more and more places are opening during the holiday period now. There seem to be some early pre-sales happening in some places already (many clothing and shoe shops are having sales now) , but promos will continue after the New year I thinkJanuary 12, 2009 at 8:55 am #7603
Oh, thanks for the info! I was kinda worried all of a sudden whether I should rebook because a few people here told me that its not a good time to visit near CNY.
I booked my trip from 22-25 partly because of low air fare and hotel rates during those dates.January 12, 2009 at 9:57 pm #7604
I think it is fair to say that most chain stores or franchises will open during the main CNY holidays but smaller, private businesses/store are likely to close. Some would even close for several weeks straight.January 13, 2009 at 1:29 am #7605ryan wrote:Oh, thanks for the info! That’s interesting, I guess because most people would be flying out of HK for holidays as opposed to flying in?
I can’t think of a reason why it’s a particularly bad time to visit during those dates.. shopping is synonymous with HK so you’ll definitely find stores open..January 13, 2009 at 5:03 am #7606
Just curious, which dates are the official holidays during CNY in HK?
Will most stores close down (if ever) usually after CNY or even a few days before?January 13, 2009 at 5:48 am #7607ryan wrote:Just curious, which dates are the official holidays during CNY in HK?

http://www.gov.hk/en/about/abouthk/holiday/ – January 26-28 are the official holidays.
I may be wrong, but I think *most* shops will be closed on Jan 26 (which is New Year’s day in Chinese calendar)January 13, 2009 at 10:00 am #7608
Where are you flying from?January 13, 2009 at 5:46 pm #76090ne0neEight wrote:Where are you flying from?
IIRC, ryan will be flying in from the Philippines. (where I just came back from a 4-day vacation 8) )January 15, 2009 at 7:37 pm #7610
Oh, which places did you visit here in the Philippines? Hope you enjoyed your stay! 🙂
Going back, I hope most shops / restaurants will be open from 22-25th especially since this is going to be my “vacation” after a very busy December…January 16, 2009 at 6:11 am #7611
We were in Cebu and we certainly enjoyed our stay! Lounging by the pool beats this “cold” (10C) weather we have now!
