Little did I realise how easy it was going to be to cave in to the HTC Vive. In Hong Kong it is over $8000hk to purchase , which felt rather high for some goggles and a pair of controllers. The best way to avoid buying this expensive bit of kit is to NOT go and have a demo of what the Vive can do. I ignored my own advise and decided to go to our HKT store to investigate. To make a long story short I was rather impressed after the demo. A few months back I was able to try … [Read more...]
Sigma MC-11 Canon Lens to Sony E-mount Adapter
Update 15th May 2016: Sigma has just released a new firmware update 1.01. It appears to address the issue of the non-functioning of lenses in continuous mode. They stated the upgrade works for the "non-compatible" lenses. As mentioned in my original report I came across this problem with a few of my Canon lenses.| I am happy to say that the problem appears to have been resolved. I have tried the 24-70mm and the 40mm Pancake lens and they were very well in continuous mode now. I have not … [Read more...]
Sony a6300 arrives in Hong Kong
The Sony a6300 has arrived in Hong Kong. Compared to the superseded a6000 it is identical in looks, but feels more premium now as it is now clothed in an alloy shell. Compared to the older a6000 it certainly feels more robust. The a6000 was a great little camera and I expect this one will not disappoint either. My short play with it gave me a good impression that the AF system is quite accurate. I did a quick pan of the room at 12fps and then examining the last photo, the centred subject … [Read more...]
DAT Two Wheels
I bought a Two Wheels contraption branded "DAT" from TaoBao the other day. Have to say I have been having a lot of fun with this thing. I guess it is similar to a Segway without the handle bars. It doesn't take long to get the hang of standing on the platform. When you get on the pads click down and the motors are activated. There is an electric motor on each wheel. When you lean slightly forward it will move forwards and lean … [Read more...]
Xperia Z Ultra
The arrival of the Z Ultra in Hong Kong appears imminent as preorders are now available. The Z Ultra is another Android machine, coming in Jelly Bean flavour. It will be running on a 2.2ghz Qualcomm, quad core cpu with 2gb of ram and 16gb of usable rom. A slot is available to add a microsd card up to 64gb in size. Probably the most interesting feature is the full HD screen. It is a massive 6.44 inches in size. That is huge for the smartphone category and uses Sony's own Triluminous display. … [Read more...]
Android Tablet Productivity
I recently got hold of the new Sony Xperia Tablet Z. I am loving this tablet so far. It comes in as a featherweight at less than 500g and the shape is beautifully thin. The screen resolution of 1920x1080 is actually higher than my current laptop. I have to say that the screen is lovely What has surprised me so far is how easily it has adapted to becoming my daily office laptop. I have largely adopted the Googleplex cloud environment now. Spreadsheets and Word documents work very well on Googe … [Read more...]

Liquipelled
I went to Liquipel my phone today. Liquipel is a process which allows you to effectively waterproof your phone. The process involves the permeation of fine nano particles to the inside and outside of the phone. The process does not require you to take apart your phone. Batteries can be done individually as well if it is removeable. In fact they allowed me to have my spare battery treated at the same time. When you leave your phone with them you need to wait 2hrs before you get your phone … [Read more...]

Rooting the Note2 LTE
Now that I have settled on my Note2 LTE, I thought it was about time I rooted it. Checking out Xda-Developers is the best place for all the fun, developer goodness. I found Chainfire had the easiest solution and sure enough everything was completed in seconds! Now I have a bit more flexibility with my Note2 for customising, backing and modding. It so nice to have these guys around! A nice feature after rooting is the ability to access a USB stick through the microusb port. Check … [Read more...]
