This offer is a way for Disney to show their appreciation and say "thanks" to Hong Kongers.  The discount was planned well ahead and is part of the "opening" strategy, according to officials, and has nothing to do with current attendance records. (which Disney has so far not made public)The details of the offer are as follows:Valid from November 8, 2005 to December 8, 2005Each visitor must present a valid Hong Kong ID cardChildren 11-years-old and under only need to be … [Read more...]

One Laptop Per Child

November 6, 2005 by kai Leave a Comment

The engineers have been hard at work at the battery life -- the goal is to get 100 minutes of power for every 1 minute of manual hand-cranking. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pretty good ROI on energy spent. In order to achiever that kind of energy-efficiency, however, the designers have had to change to a specialized style of LCD display: instead of layering color filters, groups them next to each other, resulting in a blurrier picture, but lower backlight requirements. Google Desktop 2.0 Released

November 4, 2005 by kai Leave a Comment

I've been using the beta version for a while now and have found it to be quite useful as it incorporates several features all in a convenient "Sidebar". For example, the default settings gives the ability to search and index your Gmail account, display your Google Talk contact list, and display a list of popular web news based on your past surfing preferences.  Of course, the latter will only be shown if you give Google Desktop the power to monitor your surfing habits. For more … [Read more...]

Grandpa Is Sued Over Grandson’s Downloads

November 4, 2005 by kai Leave a Comment

The MPAA is seeking as much as $600,000 in damages, after the man lacked the means to pay a $4,000 fine. "First of all, like I say, I guess I'd have to plead being naive about the whole thing," he said. "I personally didn't do it, and I wouldn't do it. But I don't think it was anything but an innocent mistake my grandson made." Lawrence said his grandson, who was then 12, downloaded "The Incredibles," "I, Robot," "The Grudge," and "The Forgotten" in December, without knowing it was illegal to do … [Read more...]

New (and gigantic) Samsung Notebooks

November 2, 2005 by kai Leave a Comment

Okay, so maybe the M70 is venturing out of notebook territory just a bit. It weighs in at a stellar 4.4kg (9.7lbs!), but with all that weight comes the power to back it up: standard is a 2.0GHz Dothan processor, with 512MB RAM, and nVidia GeForce Go 6600 graphics. A 1680 x 1050 resolution widescreen LCD panel delivers the imagery. The Samsung X1, on the other hand, seems to be the polar opposite of the M70. As seen here, the X1 is a sleek and thin unit (less than a thumb's width, supposedly), … [Read more...]

WinXP tips: Cleartype

October 29, 2005 by kai 2 Comments

Windows XP tip: Enable ClearType What is ClearType? ClearType is a nifty feature that a surprising number of users do not use. With the proliferation of LCDs during the past few years, this is a feature that no LCD owners should leave off - this includes laptop and notebook owners! Note: this feature is most beneficial to LCD users running on a DVI (digital) connection. If you are using analog or a CRT, go ahead and give this a try anyway - who knows, you may be able to see benefits. If you … [Read more...]
